While you’ve surely heard of hemp CBD, you may be wondering how much to take and how often. The answer is it depends. Keep reading for CBD Dosing information.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of more than 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the hemp plant and purported to help alleviate symptoms of pain, inflammation, anxiety and more by targeting receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system. CBD can take many forms – from tasteless isolate to balms, lotions and CBD oil.

Does CBD Work for Anxiety?

CBD has exploded in popularity for a variety of uses, with anxiety being one of the top reasons people seek it out. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for patients who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep.”

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that, “CBD has shown therapeutic efficacy in a range of animal models of anxiety and stress, reducing both behavioral and physiological (e.g., heart rate) measures of stress and anxiety.” CBD also reduced anxiety in patients with social anxiety subjected to a stressful public speaking task.

Side Effects of CBD Use

Luckily, side effects of CBD are rare, and it is thought to be safe even at high doses. According to NIDA, “a review of 25 studies on the safety and efficacy of CBD did not identify significant side effects across a wide range of dosages.”   The CDC has noted some bad reactions from synthetic CBD, however, so be sure to do your research and purchase high-quality CBD from reputable companies.

Proper Dosing

Before taking CBD – especially if you take over the counter or prescription medications – it’s important to consult your doctor and follow his or her medical advice.

A recent segment on Good Morning America suggests you “start low and go slow” with just a few milligrams per day. Because CBD is not regulated by the FDA, there is not an official recommended dose. Most studies have used dosages between 20mg to 1,500mg per day, which is quite a large range. Everybody reacts differently to CBD and it can also be difficult to know how much CBD you’re getting in each dose depending on how a product is labeled. Some packaging lists the total amount of CBD in a container instead of per dose, particularly with topical lotions and creams. Further complicating the matter, studies have found that using CBD in both too low and two high of a dose, while not necessarily dangerous, can make it less effective.

According to cbdoil.org, a good starting guideline is starting with 1-2mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. So for instance, a 150 pound person would start with a 15-30mg dose of CBD. If you feel a higher dose would benefit you, increase the dose at a rate of about a 5mg per week until the desired effect is achieved.

Trial and error, and careful recording of your symptoms and subsequent relief, can help when figuring out the correct dose for your own body chemistry.

Regardless of the type of CBD product you choose (topical, sublingual drops, edibles, etc.), it’s important to buy from a trusted source that uses third-party lab testing such as those sold on sagestreettrading.com. A few favorites include tinctures like Greater Goods and McDowell’s Miracle Elixir, edibles like Kushie Bites CBD Softgel Capsules, and topicals like Aces Joint Repair and Asana Mantra lavender lotion.
